A legacy on Lake Superior
For more than 100 years, VanLandschoot & Sons has been pulling wild whitefish from the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior. Established in 1914, they are the oldest continuously operating commercial whitefish fishery on the lake — proof that tradition and sustainability can thrive together.
Embodying shared values
We chose VanLandschoot & Sons not just for their unmatched craftsmanship in fishing but because we share the same commitments:
-
sustainability
Working hand-in-hand with Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources, their catch methods safeguard fish populations and the health of the lake.
-
supporting local
As a family-run business in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, they’ve built deep community roots — the same ethos that drives us at GLTF to keep the Great Lakes at the heart of everything we do.
-
quality & care
Their lake whitefish is Monterey Bay Aquarium’s green “best choice” rating, sharing a promise of freshness, responsible practices, and superior taste.

From net to tin
Their operations span Munising Bay and extend off the Keweenaw Peninsula near Copper Harbor, using trap net techniques for peak freshness and to reduce bycatch. Their deep respect for the lake shows up in the clean, delicate flavor of the whitefish that fills our tins.
A living tradition
Today, the fifth generation of VanLandschoots still rise before dawn to fish the same waters as their great-great-grandfather Philip, honoring his legacy in every catch.
Why it matters
For us, partnering with VanLandschoot & Sons is about more than sourcing fish — it’s about sustaining a way of life on the Great Lakes. Together, we’re proving that great taste and great responsibility can go hand in hand.
